Oct. 4, 2019 Friday Reflection
Writing: As we continued to reflect on personal narrative, all of my students wrote a final draft of their own. These will be assessed and then I will be conferring with the class.
Reading: We have been studying powerful reading habits over the last few weeks. Individual testing is completed. We will begin reading journals next week.
Math: We took our post test for unit 1. Any student with a 73% or lower was given a retake slip that must be signed. Students can log in to Think Central and do the retake.
We started unit 2 in math, relating decimals to fractions.
Science: This week in science we concentrated on energy moving through an ecosystem. We worked on developing a food web, so we could see the energy flow with a model. I included the summary from this week’s chapter.
How Do Matter and Energy Move in an Ecosystem?
1. Matter Remains in an EcosystemIn an ecosystem, matter cycles. Producers use air, water, and sunlight to grow. Consumers eat those plants or other consumers to get matter for growth. Decomposers get matter for growth from dead producers and consumers. When decomposers die, the matter enters the air and soil, so plants can use it again.
2. Energy Is Lost from an EcosystemUnlike matter, energy does not cycle through an ecosystem. Instead, energy moves only one way, from the sun to producers, and on to consumers and decomposers. At each organism, most of the energy is lost as heat, so the next organism in the chain gets far less.
3. Energy Flows Through Food ChainsFood chains are models that show how energy moves in one part of an ecosystem. They demonstrate feeding relationships between species of organisms. Energy pyramids are models that show how much of the original energy is still available at each level of the food chain.
4. Many Organisms Make up a Food WebMost kinds of plants and animals are eaten by more than one species. Food webs are models that show how all of the different food chains in an ecosystem are linked together. They show how matter and energy move throughout an entire ecosystem by tracking all of the feeding relationships among all the organisms.
5. Humans Are Parts of Food Chains and Food WebsHumans are also parts of food chains and food webs. Which food webs humans are parts of depends on what they eat. Humans take food from many different ecosystems and are part of many food webs. The whole Earth can be thought of as the ecosystem that humans live in.

Friday Reflection Sept. 20, 2019
Writing: We have been working on improving our personal narratives, by looking at use of problem and solution, dialogue, and emotions.
Reading: We continue to reflect on reading with power, and continue testing. I spend about fifteen minutes with each student, so I have been learning quite a bit about their individual reading habits.
Math: Our concentration in math this week was adding and subtracting fractions. The students learned how to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. We learned how to subtract with mixed numbers, when trading was involved. I have included many instructional videos on their Google Classroom. Please encourage your child to review these throughout the week. I also included a Jeopardy game for some fun practice. If you have never seen Google Classroom, please have your child show you.
Science: This week’s study started with producers in an ecosystem, and moved into the role of consumers. Each student had the opportunity to dissect an owl pellet. We found a lot of different bones, including various animal skulls. I am in the process of planning a visit from Leslie Science and Nature Center. We are going to have the Hunters of the sky presentation. They will bring in three predatory birds, including a Bald Eagle. Stay tuned for more details.

Writing: Earlier this week, the kids wrote a personal narrative pre-write. This is my way of seeing their current skills in writing personal narrative. We will dive into honing our skills on Monday, and begin writing based on new learning.
Reading: We continue to look at reading with power. I have started the spring reading tests this week. Your 5th grader should know their current reading level very soon.
Math: We started working in our math books this week. We completed lessons 1-1 through 1-4. Students learned how to identify equivalent fractions. They learned many strategies for comparing fractions. There will be no homework for the weekend, but students will be encouraged to review the weeks homework from these sections.
Science: We continued our work on Ecosystems. The students did an investigation, where they analyzed plant growth data. We had a control plant, that we compared to other plants that were deprived things like, water, CO2, light, and soil. Students had to make claims and provide evidence. They had to decide what plants really need to grow.
Other: We started our first Greek and Latin unit on Monday of this week. The kids have been doing one activity page each day. Many have been doing it in school, but it is assigned as homewood. The first Greek and Latin quiz will be on Monday.

Writing: We have not really started our formal writing lessons yet, but we will begin studying Personal Narrative next week.
Reading: We have started some of our reading instruction this week. We are looking at ways to grow as readers. Our goal should always be to strive to be better, more powerful readers. I would like the book students brought from home to be kept in their desks, as a back up text for free reading time.
Math: We worked on identifying multiples of various numbers. We used skip counting, and hundred charts to help us. The students also identified common multiples between two numbers. I assigned the Unit 1 Pre-Test this morning. We will start unit one on Monday.
Science: Our first unit of study is Ecosystems. Students traveled to different ecosystems around the world, and identified interactions between living and non living things.
Other: On Thursday, September 12th , we be Curriculum Night for grades 1-5. The first session will be from 6:00-6:30 followed by ½ hour where you are encouraged to go introduce yourself to our new
